READ MARY'S PERSONAL STORY OF TRANSFORMATION...
"The Power of Picking up the Telephone"
One glorious day, at age eight, my mother took me for my first dance lesson. As class began my mother says I lit up like a Christmas tree. Something moved in me, and all I could think of was dance. I felt girly and beautiful and alive.
On one of the few truly sad days of my childhood my beloved teacher, Jeannie Riffle, moved away from our quaint Midwest town of 900 people, and with no other dance instructor for miles and miles of cornfields, my dancing days came to an abrupt and disappointing halt.
Fast-forward through a stint playing high school and college basketball, marriage, and labor and delivery. I still longed to dance, but with a full time job, three children, a husband and a mother-in-law to take care of, my plate looked like I was always going through the all-you-can-eat buffet.
One day last year my friend causally mentioned that she was taking dance lessons. Immediately lights flashed in my mind and I swear I could hear a host of angels singing Shakira's "My Hips Don't Lie." I knew what I had to do.
I picked up the phone...
and 46 years after my first dance lesson, I walked into a studio where I met my new private ballroom instructor, a tall, dark, handsome, sexy, (happily married) Latino dance machine named Manny. One step and I was addicted, and like Amy Winehouse, I knew I had no plans for rehab.
The photo of me above, at my first professional competition at the Colorado Star Ball, is the result one year after that telephone call. It is a photo of me in complete bliss.
Another Phone Call
A few months ago my phone rang. On the other end was Renee in Florida. I heard her take a big breath and then she said, "You don't know me but I heard you speak many years ago, and I have read all your books. I've always dreamed of becoming an author and speaker and I wondered if I could hire you for the year to coach me (another big breath) AND I want to come to your house in Denver for a long weekend in October to get started."
Surprised yet impressed with her passion for personal growth and her willingness to take a risk, I heard myself say, "Sure."
We had a magical weekend! I have never witnessed such a dramatic human transformation. She truly expanded before my eyes.
